Development and Evaluation of an Undergraduate Science Communication Module
This paper describes the design and evaluation of an undergraduate final year science communication module for the Science Faculty at the University of East Anglia. The module focuses specifically on science communication and aims to bring an understanding of how science is disseminated to the public. Students on the module are made aware of the models surrounding science communication and investigate how the science culture interfaces with the public. During the module they learn how to adapt science concepts for different audiences and how to talk confidently about science to a lay-audience. Student motivation for module choice centres on the acquisition of transferable skills and students develop these skills through designing, running and evaluating a public outreach event at a school or in a public area. These transferable skills acquired include communication, interaction with different organisations such as museums and science centres, developing understanding of both the needs of different audiences and the importance of time management. They also develop skills relating to self-reflection and how to use this as a tool for future self development. The majority of students completing the module go on to further study, either a PhD, MSc or teacher training. The module can be sustained in its present formed if capped at 40 students, however it is recognised that to increase cohort size, further investment of faculty time and resources would be required
Solar Stereoscopy with STEREO/EUVI A and B spacecraft from small (6 deg) to large (170 deg) spacecraft separation angles
We performed for the first time stereoscopic triangulation of coronal loops
in active regions over the entire range of spacecraft separation angles
(, and
). The accuracy of stereoscopic correlation depends mostly on the
viewing angle with respect to the solar surface for each spacecraft, which
affects the stereoscopic correspondence identification of loops in image pairs.
From a simple theoretical model we predict an optimum range of , which is also experimentally confirmed. The best
accuracy is generally obtained when an active region passes the central
meridian (viewed from Earth), which yields a symmetric view for both STEREO
spacecraft and causes minimum horizontal foreshortening. For the extended
angular range of we find a mean 3D
misalignment angle of of stereoscopically
triangulated loops with magnetic potential field models, and for a force-free field model, which is partly caused by
stereoscopic uncertainties . We predict optimum

The effects of ractopamine-HCl (optaflexx) on performance, carcass characteristics, and meat quality of finishing feedlot heifers
Beta-adrenergic agonists are commonly used in livestock production to accelerate growth by enhancing lean tissue gain. These compounds repartition nutrients away from fat deposition and toward protein accretion. Generally, increased growth is associated with ractopamine feeding, which improves feed conversion and increases body weight gain. However, little data exists on the effects of ractopamine-HCl on live performance or carcass characteristics of beef heifers. Data released from Elanco Animal Health indicate that differences between gender may exist in response to ractopamine, and therefore appropriate strategies for the administration of this compound must be defined for heifers independent of those for steers. The Impact of Exercising During Haemodialysis on Blood Pressure, Markers of Cardiac Injury and Systemic Inflammation - Preliminary Results of a Pilot Study

dysfunction. Little is known about the acute effects of exercise during haemodialysis. Exercise
has numerous health benefits but in other populations has a profound impact upon blood
pressure, inflammation and immune function; therefore having the potential to exacerbate
cardiovascular and immune dysfunction in this vulnerable population. Methods: Fifteen
patients took part in a randomised-crossover study investigating the effect of a 30-min
bout of exercise during haemodialysis compared to resting haemodialysis. We assessed
blood pressure, plasma markers of cardiac injury and systemic inflammation and neutrophil
degranulation. Results: Exercise increased blood pressure immediately post-exercise; however,
1 hour after exercise blood pressure was lower than resting levels (106±22 vs. 117±25 mm
Hg). No differences in h-FABP, cTnI, myoglobin or CKMB were observed between trial arms.
Exercise did not alter circulating concentrations of IL-6, TNF-α or IL-1ra nor clearly suppress
neutrophil function. Conclusions: This study demonstrates fluctuations in blood pressure
during haemodialysis in response to exercise. However, since the fall in blood pressure
occurred without evidence of cardiac injury, we regard it as a normal response to exercise
superimposed onto the haemodynamic response to haemodialysis. Importantly, exercise did
not exacerbate systemic inflammation or immune dysfunction; intradialytic exercise was well
tolerated
Ectodysplasin has a dual role in ectodermal organogenesis: inhibition of Bmp activity and induction of Shh expression.
Ectodermal organogenesis is regulated by inductive and reciprocal signalling cascades that involve multiple signal molecules in several conserved families. Ectodysplasin-A (Eda), a tumour necrosis factor-like signalling molecule, and its receptor Edar are required for the development of a number of ectodermal organs in vertebrates. In mice, lack of Eda leads to failure in primary hair placode formation and missing or abnormally shaped teeth, whereas mice overexpressing Eda are characterized by enlarged hair placodes and supernumerary teeth and mammary glands. Here, we report two signalling outcomes of the Eda pathway: suppression of bone morphogenetic protein (Bmp) activity and upregulation of sonic hedgehog (Shh) signalling. Recombinant Eda counteracted Bmp4 activity in developing teeth and, importantly, inhibition of BMP activity by exogenous noggin partially restored primary hair placode formation in Eda-deficient skin in vitro, indicating that suppression of Bmp activity was compromised in the absence of Eda. The downstream effects of the Eda pathway are likely to be mediated by transcription factor nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB), but the transcriptional targets of Edar have remained unknown. Using a quantitative approach, we show in cultured embryonic skin that Eda induced the expression of two Bmp inhibitors, Ccn2/Ctgf (CCN family protein 2/connective tissue growth factor) and follistatin. Moreover, our data indicate that Shh is a likely transcriptional target of Edar, but, unlike noggin, recombinant Shh was unable to rescue primary hair placode formation in Eda-deficient skin explants
Environmental risk assessment of genetically modified crops: The use of molecular markers to trace insect and wind dispersal of Brassica napus pollen.
End of Project ReportThis project aimed to develop a better understanding of the potential risks of gene flow and to generate
isolation distances required for genetically modified (GM) OSR. The study examined biotic (insect)
and abiotic (wind) pollen dispersal over two seasons. A considerable portion of work was devoted to
the development of molecular markers, to differentiate Brassica napus varieties from each other to
distinguish them from their wild relatives.
The project broadly aimed to study gene flow, via pollen movement, from OSR but specifically aimed
to:
! Characterise B. napus cv. Marinka using molecular markers.
! Elucidate the distance travelled by OSR pollen by biotic dispersal.
! Elucidate the distance travelled by OSR pollen by abiotic dispersal.
! Elucidate pollination/seed set at various distances from a source crop using male sterile bait
plants.
! Develop risk assessment/containment strategies
Accelerated Metastasis after Short-Term Treatment with a Potent Inhibitor of Tumor Angiogenesis
SummaryHerein we report that the VEGFR/PDGFR kinase inhibitor sunitinib/SU11248 can accelerate metastatic tumor growth and decrease overall survival in mice receiving short-term therapy in various metastasis assays, including after intravenous injection of tumor cells or after removal of primary orthotopically grown tumors. Acceleration of metastasis was also observed in mice receiving sunitinib prior to intravenous implantation of tumor cells, suggesting possible “metastatic conditioning” in multiple organs. Similar findings with additional VEGF receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors implicate a class-specific effect for such agents. Importantly, these observations of metastatic acceleration were in contrast to the demonstrable antitumor benefits obtained when the same human breast cancer cells, as well as mouse or human melanoma cells, were grown orthotopically as primary tumors and subjected to identical sunitinib treatments
